What does "Humane Society" mean?
I live in Kitimat, B.C., Canada and we have an animal rescue shelter called Kitimat Humane Society,
with someone running the shelter, some employees, volunteers and a board of directors.
Sometime in November, I called the shelter regarding some cats I saw at a window in one of the
apartments close to my house as I was walking my dog. The cats had flees walking all over their
small bodies, they had bites and bloody wounds, luck of hair from probably cat fights, they were
dirty and smelled terrible. Adorable cats, crying, crawling up the window, miaowing to me. The
place inside was a small room with the door closed, the window was a tiny bit opened, and the smell
was terrible. There was a cat litter box dirty and wet with urine. There was no water, the food was in
a store pail container, which was how they got fed, and the carpet must have had urine all over, for
the smell was umbearable .
When I got home, I called the humane society and let them know of what I saw and asked them to
come over so that I could show them.
They sent a teenager, which I took him there. He saw, from the outside, of course, called the
shelter and did tell them that the conditions where terrible and the cats looked very unhealthy.
They told the boy to go inside the building and talk to the building manager so that he could talk to
the pets owner and resolve the problem, but that I could not stay or go inside.
I came home. Two days later, I was walking by again, and the cats were still there, and in the same
environment, so I called them back and asked them what they intended to do about the situation. I
was told that all they could do was talk to the manager and that the manager was supposed to give
the owner some notice to clean-up the place or get rid of the cats, but for me not to worry because
they were looking into it.
Two weeks went by, and the situation didn't get resolved. I called them back, nothing...I called the
person that at the time was running for mayor, which is the mayor today. The mayor called the
person in charge of the shelter, and asked her to give me a call so that we could work something
out, because I could not let these animals stay one more day in that place. I told her that I was
willing to bring them home and look after them until they found them a home and that I would be
needing help with vet expenses for there were two females, which just have had babies another
female, and a kitty. There were more, but these were the ones I was able to get. I don't know what
the guy did with the other cats.
Pictures of the cats were sent to the email she gave me, but the email's came back. (I sent two). I
eventually, had to go down to the shelter with the cats pictures, so that she could post them.
I have been contacting her in regards to get help so that they can get spayed, but she has been
giving me the run-around.
I have contacted the District of Kitimat, which they contacted her, and she says it is not her
responsibility, since I decided to get the cats myself.
The district gave me the President of the board's number, which I called. She told me she would be
contacting the person that is running the shelter and that she would get back to me.
When the president called me back, she tells me that they could not help me because they didn't
have funds, and that I shouldn't have picked up the cats because they had left a notice on the cats
owner's door. Of course, I know that wasn't the true, since I had been going back and forth,
contacting them and the guy and the mayor, and so on. There are so many excuses, that It makes
me sick.
Now, I find myself having to pay for all the vets expenses, because they went back on their word,
and since nothing was done in writing, it's my word against theirs.
I have two cats and a dog of my own, plus the three I rescued makes six animals, which I love them
all, but how am I supposed to get the money to pay for all the vets bills. Somehow, I am going to
have to do it.
This is to let people know how some shelters work and how little dedication they have. These
people here don't really care about the animals. For them, this is just a job. Well...it's wrong. A
shelter is there to help and protect the animals, even if they have to run some risks to do it. But
they say they have their rules.
They could not go there a get the cats, they say! Well...I went there I got them. I didn't have to go
inside. I did it from outdoors, I knocked at the window, talked to the guy, politely...they could have
done the same thing.
This is my story.
If you can help an animal, please do not hesitate to do it. They give you so much...they appreciate
you...give you love, and they make you a better person.
From ltop left to right, are the pictures of the cats I rescued. Maguie, Gloria, Gloria and Baby. Baby
is Gloria's son.
